What it promised

The manufacturer behind the Meguiar's brand designs products with the intention of sitting at the top end of the market, with the appeal of a professional, easy to use, affordable, quick detailing solution. It is therefore common to find a variety of singular products each with their own specific roles; everything from cleaning solvents to clay bar lubricants, quick detailers and sealants. It is for this reason to use the correct product for the correct application. Here, they claim their Maguiar's Perfect Clarity Glass Cleaner has been specifically formulated with the protection of ceramic in mind, to work inside and outside the home, on everything from kitchen sinks to any type of tinted car windows, lifting grime and grease, while preventing swirls, streaks and refouling with an ionic formula.

What we found

We were so impressed by the Meguiar's Perfect Clarity Glass Cleaner that we ended up testing it twice, once on its designated test section of a window, and then to further challenge it, we came back to use it to remove smears created by the Tesco Glass and Insect Cleaner, the worst performing product in our tests. We compared the results with the other best performing products.

We found the Meguiar's was true to its claim in its superior ability to remove the film of grease and lift dirt with it requiring less pressure to do so on the external section in contrast to the other brands. Internally, instead of spraying onto the window section, we applied the Meguiar's directly to a microfibre (as per instruction) which reduced the amount required to clean the whole section, but also left the window with an invisible like sheen. It left no visible streaks and a performance, that the light test later confirmed, lifted more grease than its rivals to produce a window of perfect clarity. It did however struggle a little more in the second part of the test (with a pre-smeared window section), however we would class this as untypically heavy soiled, of which it outperformed every other cleaner in lifting the soiling with every buff. It made for little effort and a resulting window finish worthy of a FritzReview Gold award. While Meguiar's state the Perfect Clarity Glass Cleaner has lubricating qualities and an ionic formula to prevent swirls and refouling respectively, we found it difficult to objectively reproduce this in our tests.

As we found with the other best performing glass cleaners, the weaknesses with the product lie with its ergonomics, packaging and instruction. While the Meguiar's isn't marketed as a multi-surface cleaner, other brands were more informative about were you can and can't use their products and which materials to avoid if they are susceptible to corrosion. Meguiar's gave little upfront transparency about this, or how it utilises dust repellent technology (and how long a coating would last), and through testing we would class it more as a ceramic surface cleaner. Furthermore, for a product aimed at the higher end of the market, it is disappointing that even the cheapest brands in our test were packaged in more durable plastics, with more pleasant mechanisms. Despite this, the Meguiar's bottle passed our shake and storage test, even under light compression and did not leak. Going forward however, we would like to see a better quality spray mechanism, designed with a more reassuring quality of plastic.

Ingredients to watch out for

Perfect Clarity Glass Cleaner is made up of Water, Butoxyethanol, Isopropyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol (PG), a mixture of perfumes to give its coconut like smell, and a 3:1 combination of Methylchloroisothiazolinone and Methylisothiazolinone. It is important to note a few of these are irritants and large proportion of people suffer a topical reaction to PG alone. This is why we advise caution, promote the correct use of gloves and would remind PG sensitive individuals to wash if product to skin contact is made. We would further advise the avoidance of using Meguiar's Perfect Clarity Glass Cleaner on paint/metal work as a precaution to corrosion susceptibility.

After use

Considering its impressive formula, we would have liked to see a larger refill option like CarPlan's Demon Glass, as the plastics used in the spray mechanism are a low point for the price the Meguiar's Perfect Clarity retails at. Durability and reuse is therefore somewhat suspect, and as with all the glass cleaners we had on test, there is difficulty in recycling the plastic trigger/spray mechanism at the recycling centres that we spoke to. We had greater luck with the lower plastic container at these centres, which was widely accepted once detached from the nozzle head, and once again had no trouble with the empty Meguiar's bottle.
